Dubai- a blend of modernity & tradition

From the timeless tranquility of the desert to the lively bustle of the shopping malls, Dubai offers visitors a kaleidoscope of unlimited colors. One of the most significant international cities of the 21st century, Dubai is an icon for luxury, quality and modernity; a city where the sophistication of the modern era walks hand in hand with the simplicity of the bygone times.

Millions of tourists from around the world converge upon Dubai every year to savor its delights and delicacies. Awash in sunlight all year round, Dubai is a supreme beach resort. The pale turquoise waters of the Gulf lap the pristine beaches of pure, soft, white sand.

Apart from deep sea swimming and sunbathing, cruising, yachting, jet skiing, wind surfing, paragliding, speedboat racing, and scuba diving are some of the most popular modes of recreation. A shoppers’ paradise, Dubai boasts some of the most exclusive tax-free designer labels; and a gourmet’s delight, it offers internationally acclaimed food from notable chefs.

Dubai's strategic location is also a key element in its success. The heart of one of the world’s richest regions, Dubai is located midway between the Far East and Europe. Dubai has an all-encompassing social circuit, from the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest horse racing event, to the famous Dubai Rugby Sevens, the renowned Dubai Tennis Championships and the premier Dubai Desert Classics. Luxurious living, the finest cuisine and world class shopping have now become the hallmarks of modern Dubai, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Dubai has invested heavily in its infrastructure, creating a city of multiple-lane highways and skyscrapers, as well as a model city that provides ultra-modern amenities, stunning scenery, exclusivity, privacy, tax free living and safe environment.

State-of-the-art telecommunications, reliable power, modern schools and healthcare are all laying the foundations of an increasingly multi-cultural and modern society. And Dubai has earned a reputation for constantly reinventing itself, chalking out strategic plans for development and keeping in mind the growing needs of urbanization and industrialization. Following the vision of making Dubai an icon of ultramodern and ultrachic living is the booming real estate market in the emirate.

Many projects, which could only have been trapped in architectural imagination, are already silhouetted against Dubai’s skyline. One of these is the symbol of modern Dubai, Burj Al Arab, which is the world’s most luxurious hotel. With its high rise buildings of breathtaking opulence, Dubai is a tribute to gleaming modernity. Skyscrapers jostle along the spectacular glitter of world-class hotels and up-scale golf courses, which in turn provide the backdrop for ambitious projects like The Palm-the palm shaped archipelago of islands, often referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world”.

Dubai, with its wonder, charm, and modernity promises a lifetime of treasured memories and thrill to enrich your life. The delights of Dubai await you!

Getting around Dubai:

Dubai is ideally located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. More than 80 airlines operate to and from Dubai International Airport to more than 130 destinations, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. Emirates Airlines, the international airlines of the UAE is based in Dubai.

Public Transport

Dubai has a well-connected network of public transport that is convenient besides being economical to travel. The air-conditioned local buses run from the Deira and the Bur Dubai Bus Stations. Taufeer, the monthly bus pass, makes travel more economical. Regular buses are available from Dubai International Airport. Dubai transport Corporation runs air-conditioned buses to Sharjah, Hatta, Al Khawaneej and Al Awir.

Water Transport

Small motor boats known as Abras run across the Dubai creek daily from early morning until around midnight and charges 50 fils per journey.

Taxi

Air-conditioned taxis are easily available on the street or pre-booked by telephone. The Dubai Transport Corporation operates metered taxis and is safe for even a lonely lady traveler. The drivers are very polite and well mannered and occasionally might not have detailed knowledge of the city and ask the passengers for directions. One can hire taxis without the fear of being cheated by the driver because they have computerized meters. The meter of the taxis in the city start at Dh3.00 while at airport, they start at Dh20.

Car Hire

A valid International Driving Permit, passport and credit card are required for one to hire a car in Dubai. Visitors from many European, North American and many Asian countries can obtain a temporary local driving license if they do not have an international license. A valid national license, passport and two passport-size photographs are required in order to do this.

Fully comprehensive insurance is essential. In the event of an accident, the police must be informed and a written police report obtained, otherwise the hire company’s insurance might not cover any damage. Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have held a full license for one year. The age limit is often raised to 25 years, for more expensive models. The payment must be made by credit card.

Dubai- The Shoppers Paradise

One of Dubai’s greatest attractions is its superb shopping. Whatever the visitor’s tastes — be it couture from Paris or Milan, hi-tech electronics from Japan, or a piece of silver Bedouin jewellery he or she will find it at the right price in Dubai.

The city draws large numbers of ‘shopping tourists’ from countries within the region and from as far as Eastern Europe, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. As an open port with low import duties, Dubai’s retail prices are reasonable and the variety of products available is virtually unrivalled. Free of tax, many top brand-name products are cheaper in Dubai than in the countries of their origin. In addition to the souk districts and shopping malls listed below, there are many top-class department stores and boutiques throughout the city.

Shopping Malls in Dubai
Attractive modern shopping plazas are conveniently located throughout the city, housing a wide range of shops, boutiques, supermarkets, restaurants and fast-food outlets. These malls also have a harmonious blend of enclosed and exciting streetscapes, the best of entertainment, food, upscale residences and state of the art office space. In terms of design they have the most modern architecture with traditional icons.

All the stores in these malls offer a unique combination of traditional and modern merchandise with retailers ranging from BHS, Alfred Dunhill, McDonalds, Nike, Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins and Giordano to its extensive collection of middle eastern textile shops, Perfumeries and Jewellers.

These stores are evolving around fashion (ladies, men, children), ready to wear, fashion accessories, jewellery, watches, leather products, services (money exchange, pharmacy, beauty salons, hair dressing salons, mobile phones shop), fashion accessories, entertainment (music store), optics, restaurants, coffee shop and food court. Parking facilities in front of the malls and basement are one of the fantastic facilities that these malls provide.

Deira malls
Leading malls in Deira district include Deira City Centre, Al Mulla Plaza, the Inter-Continental Plaza, Abu Hail Shopping Centre, The Galleria, Al Ghurair Centre, Al Warba Centre, Al Manal Centre, Al Bustan Centre, Al Futtaim Centre, The Dana Centre, The Center and Hamarain Centre.

Dubai malls
On the Dubai side of the Creek the Wafi, BurJuman Centre, Lamcy Plaza, Al Dhiyafa Centre, Karama Centre, Al Rais Shopping Mall, Dune Centre, Al Hana Centre, Al Khaleej Centre and Holiday Centre are among the largest complexes.

Jumeirah malls
The Jumeirah district has Magrudy’s Shopping Mall, Markaz Al Jumeirah, Jumaira Plaza, The Beach Centre and Palm Strip.

Gold Souqs
Dubai’s most famous market of all is the gold souk, where narrow streets are lined with shop windows glinting with bracelets, necklaces and earrings in 18, 21 and 22 carat gold. Bars of 24 carat in any form and weight, and bullion coins in 22 and 24 carat are also available. Prices are very reasonable and largely determined by weight, rather than design and craftsmanship.

Carpets
In Deira Tower’s shopping mall, carpet traders from countries across the Gulf — Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan — have established a carpet souk where prices in the 40 shops range from a few hundred dirhams to many thousands.

Consumer Goods
In Bur Dubai, Al Fahidi Street is noted for its electronic goods shops while nearby Cosmos Lane is lined with stores selling the textiles of West and East, from cool printed cottons to exotic brocades.

Other Shopping Spots
Further out from the city centre, Karama is Dubai’s bargain basement with an array of busy shops selling toys, household goods, textiles, fashions, accessories and much more.

Foodstuffs
These range from the traditional narrow streets of the spice souk just a stone’s throw from the Creek, to the modern fish souk with the many varieties caught in Gulf waters, and the fruit and vegetable souk with its bustle and vivid colours.
